The majority of our efforts are self funded. As such, we rely heavily on the skills and time of our community members to build, design or install everything from flyers to noticeboards, or to run events, organise letterbox drops, and ensure all our efforts are coordinated. Without these many dozens of volunteers contributing to the Scullin Community Group’s projects each and every week we would not have made such significant achievements in such a short amount of time. Thank you all!
Working together to fundraise
We run occasional fundraisers and make some income from the sales in the (100% volunteer run) Scullin Traders store. Our 2018 trivia night was fabulous and we’re sure another one will come along soon!
Gratefully received grants
We have been delighted to receive a number of grants to support our work connecting the community and revitalising the shops. Many thanks for the following:
- The ACT Government Graffiti management fund – supported our gorgeous rainforest mural and its cockatoo companion mural (both in the Scullin shops courtyard).
- The ACT Government’s Adopt-a-Park program – this grant funding will assist with our events to improve the gardens at the Scullin shops and in other public parklands in Scullin. It is part of our new Parks and Places project – volunteers always welcomed!
- The Australian Government’s Strengthening Communities Grant – after being shortlisted by our Federal member, Dr Andrew Leigh, we received this grant to build a shade structure in the courtyard of the Scullin shops.
- The ACT Government’s Digital Participation grant – providing support for our new website (do you like it?), a phone and tablet for the Scullin Traders, and digital media training for our volunteers.
- The ACT Government’s Community Support and Infrastructure grant – provided support for building the raised garden beds now framing the courtyard as well as other small infrastructure changes.
- The ACT Chief Minister’s Fund – this one off grant of $5000 helped us kickstart the Scullin Traders, which turned over more than $45,000 in its first six months. The majority of the money we earned in the store went to Canberra creatives and microtraders (1-2 person businesses from across the ACT).
Partnerships
- We love partnerships and have been told we are “a dream” to collaborate with.
- The Belconnen Community Service team always has our back – many thanks for your ongoing interest.
- Students of the University of Canberra’s social entrepreneurship accelerator, The Mill House Ventures, recently worked with us on a commercial project proposal.
- We are currently collaborating with the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House and are honoured to be invited to be the special guests at their first annual #UPrising event, coming up in Spring 2020. (Keep an eye on our calendar!)
